Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Benefits for Children

Disabled individuals who have children are generally eligible to receive a higher amount of monthly Social Security income benefits to help support his or her child. Additionally, Social Security provides benefits to eligible adult disabled children.

Disabled adult children may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability Insurance benefits even if they have not worked in previous years. If a parent had worked sufficient years, the disabled adult child may be entitled to benefits if:

  • The individual became disabled prior to reaching the age of 22, and
  • The adult child must either have a diseased parent or have a parent receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits for Children

SSI benefits may be paid to children who meet the Social Security Administration's (SSA) definition of disabled. Children with "severe functional limitations" are determined by SSA as disabled. Disabled children may be eligible for SSI benefits if:

  • The child became disabled prior to reaching the age of 18
  • The parent and child meet the low income standards (once the child turns 18, the income standard only applies to the child's income)
  • Automatic benefits are generally given to children with certain conditions during the determination period, such as children with HIV, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Muscular Dystrophy, and children who are blind or deaf
